QE2. Goodbye magazine 2008

I have film and pics of her leaving Greenock on her last visit 5 October 2008. I was on a little ship that followed her down the river it was very moving to wave goodbye to her

Recently acquired this book following an exchange of posts with a forum member (thanks Brian_O).

Although the book I received is in very good condition and is a first edition, I was surprised to find a couple of documents folded neatly within the book. Attached is a scan of one of those documents, a letter from the publishers to a British newspaper of the day (The Sun, at the time it was a broadsheet!). Basically, the content is seeking a review of the book and subsequent publishing promotion in the newspaper. However, I thought if of interest that the lead-in to the main dialogue there is specific reference to "the faults of the QE2"

Judging by the condition of both book and letters, the publishers do not appear to have been given their wish.

Recently added this title to my collection, it was a bargain buy in used condition.

For those interested it is only a small book (about 19cmx13cm), it is heavily image laden but the dimensions of the book do not do some of them justice. There is some brief history about Cunard as well as QE2 but in my opinion it is light. So if you're looking for something with an in-depth perspective of the line or the ship then this isn't one I'd recommend.

This book 'The Queens' was published in May 1968 and is about RMS Queen Mary, RMS Queen Elizabeth and RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 and about the royals who gave their names to these famous liners.
The cover photo is of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh leaving the platform following the launch of the QE2.

The attached book dates from 1985 and lists Ron Warwick and Bill Flayhart as the authors. Two later editions have also been published but list Ron Warwick as the sole author.

I met Bill Flayhart on QE2 in July 1985, a couple of months after I bought a copy. I reported a couple of errors that I spotted in the book and Bill acknowledged the errors but I don't know if they were corrected in the later editions.

The attached book by John Maxtone Graham was published to coincide with the re-entry into service of QE2 after the Bremerhaven re-engining refit over the winter of 1986-87.

Here's the autobiography of "Captain Bob", as we was known to both passengers and crew. I bought it aboard QE2 in 1982. Captain Bob retired at the end of July 1985.

I used to have a book written by the ships Doctor whose name I can't remember, can't remember the title either
but it was very interesting, there was a story about an old couple and one of them was terminally ill.
One night mid Atlantic they both just climbed over the guard rail............. Sad

This book, Ocean Ships, is a list of hundreds of ships with their statistics. The first version was published in 1964 and it has been updated at various times since. This version from 1967 features a nice artists impression of QE2 at New York on the cover.

Re: QE2 Books or Newspapers

Just finished reading this

As it says it is the autobiography of Sir Basil Smallpeice who from the late sixties until the Trafalgar House acquisition was a senior director and ultimately Managing Director of Cunard. Although QE2 was already in the process of development and build he was very firmly at the centre of government negotiations for the follow-on loans to the company to complete the build. He also led the negotiations with John Brown following the engine difficulties suffered at the beginning by the new queen.

The majority of the book is devoted to his time at BOAC (now British Airways) and includes interesting insight into the post-war development of the airline.

One bizarre aspect of his career was he led on behalf of BOAC the merger talks with Cunard in the 1950's and then led the de-merger talks on behalf of Cunard in the 1960's.

Overall a good insight into the companies activities as well as the impact of government involvement and political manouverings with nationalised industures.
