I think it looks uncluttered allowing you to see her lines without the distraction of two large (and unattractive) tenders..

At Malaga on October 12, 1982 (Columbus Day)

One of the few photos I have of QE2 flying the Red Ensign.

At Malaga on yet another holiday (Fall of Granada Day in 1492), August 12, 1986

Note that QE2 is flying the Blue Ensign, as she did on the vast majority of her voyages when I was aboard.

The Blue ensign is flown when the master of the ship has a British Admiralty warrant. Normally it means they are in the Royal Naval Reserve, hence the RNR suffix. The alternative is to fly the normal British Merchant Marine Red Ensign (the Royal Navy is a White Ensign)

I was aware of that. However, in the latter years of her career QE2 hardly ever flew the Blue Ensign even when she was eligible to do so.

BTW the Captain on the 1982 call at Malaga was Peter Jackson; on the 1986 call it was Commodore Doug Ridley.

It's funny some of the changes over the years. The above photo from Louis shows 3 Deck aft looking all clean and utilitarian. But here we see it painted black and not so clean lol. Indeed it was an area at night you had to watch where you stepped as there were crew sitting around in the dark smoking 'stuff' and making out lol. Quite an area.
