Nice to see someone posting a picture of one of the lifeboats under the topic "Tenders". Alpha and Beta were horrible tenders that bounced around like corks, even in calm water. Added to their poor seakeeping qualities, they marred the appearance of QE2. I was delighted when they were gotten rid of.

The following is from Lloyds 1969:

This photo was taken while QE2 waited to complete her delayed trials.

"The life saving appliances aboard the new Cunarder are designed to enable her full compliment of more than 3,000 passengers and crew to abandon ship in half an hour.

Life boat seating is provided by 20 boats which are arranged in two lines of 10 boats on either side of the upper deck.

All boats were designed and built by Watercraft Ltd. East Molesey, Surrey. The firm incidentally, also supplied the crew's swimming pool and the children's paddling pool- both constructed in glass fibre."

Thanks Scott, do you know when they were removed? was it during the 1987 Refit?

PS - I wonder what would the Coast Guard say to such Lifeboats on a ship today?

These lifeboat/tenders were far better sea boats than the awful tenders Alpha and Beta which bobbed up and down like a cork.

On her first couple of visits to Liverpool, the Mersey Ferries were used as tenders as she was unable to dock at the time. I have some images of the ferries alongside her, I will have to dig them out and post them.
